Ashton Kutcher a surprisingly good 'man'

CBS's "Two and a Half Men" is now actually one man, played by Jon Cryer, one near-man, played by Angus T. Jones, and one manchild.
That would be Ashton Kutcher, who made his debut Monday night on the de-Sheened sitcom as Walden Schmidt. Walden is nearly the opposite of Charlie Sheen's now-dead sleaze king Charlie Harper: Sweet, unsarcastic but -- here we stay true to the show's gawping bawdiness -- possessed of an astounding anatomical endowment that he soon puts to use.
The instant verdict: Kutcher was not at all bad. He was quite likable.
First, though, we must dispose of the corpse. I think if creator Chuck Lorre could have had all the cast and crew come out shrieking and tear apart a lifelike effigy of departed star Sheen, with blood and viscera and intestines tossed into a vat of hot oil, he would have. It's not as if anyone would blame Lorre: Sheen's outrageous behavior earlier this year left a top-rated sitcom without a completed season, without an anchor -- and, regardless of how you regard Sheen personally, without one of the best sitcom actors in prime time.
And so the first half of the episode practically danced with sadistic, vengeful glee in explaining how Sheen's character, the irredeemably low-life womanizer Charlie Harper, had perished: At a memorial service, crazy Rose (the very funny Melanie Lynskey) hinted that she had shoved him under the Paris Metro after she caught him cheating during their honeymoon.
"His body just exploded," she said, "like a balloon full of meat." The only memories Charlie's many lovers shared were about the sexually transmitted diseases he'd given them, and one woman regretted not being able to spit on the body. None of this was funny. It probably wasn't supposed to be. It was a shiv, and it was being stuck in Charlie Sheen.
Enter Ashton
Then Kutcher showed up as Schmidt, sopping wet from having tried to drown himself over a broken heart. (He gave up, he said, because the water was too cold.) With his long hair, scruffy beard and hippie-dippy, somewhat stupid sincerity, he seemed at first to have wandered in from a production of Godspell. Except that, as mentioned, he is apparently better endowed than Young Frankenstein and, unlike Mr. Sheen, possesses a body that can be paraded around naked with a preening, unembarrassed confidence.
He's very nearly a character out of porn. Did you think you were tuning in to "Downton Abbey?"
And the fact is that Kutcher, despite having spent so much time over the past few years branding and Tweeting himself, is a good comic actor. Not great. His limit may be that he knows how to play a doofus while subtly reminding us that he really isn't -- he likes to clown, but he probably doesn't want to BE a clown. His self-love may not allow that.
Sheen, on the other hand, had the cold toughness of loathing, anger and regret, a comic style almost radical (for prime time) in its thin ash of contempt. True comedy doesn't require a smiley face. How else could Sheen have managed to sell tickets for something called the Violent Torpedo of Truth Tour?
But you see where we are now: Kutcher on Sheen's old sitcom. Sheen, appearing on the Emmys, wishing all the best for "Two and a Half Men," seemingly purged of his acidic irony. It was like watching the rebel Winston from Orwell's "1984" after Big Brother got through with him.
Kutcher is the one known for punking. Sheen, one might say, is the one who ended up punk'd.

NFL fan pat-downs will take more time

The NFL says it has "enhanced" its pat-down procedure for fans entering stadiums to improve safety.
The league has asked all 32 teams to have stadium security search fans from the ankles to the knees. Previously, fans were patted down from the waist up for banned items such as alcohol and weapons.
Last week, a man was arrested for using an illegal stun gun at Sunday night's Dallas Cowboys-New York Jets game.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Friday the "enhanced security procedures" are not a result of any specific threat, but the league is "always refining and improving" security.
He says the checks, which began before last week's season-opening games, will take longer, and encourages fans to arrive early.
Jets: Jets linebacker David Harris, wide receiver Santonio Holmes and safety Eric Smith are all listed as questionable with injuries for the team's game against Jacksonville on Sunday. All three were limited in practice Friday after Harris injured a toe in the opener against Dallas, and Holmes (knee and quadriceps) and Smith (ankle) were hurt during practice this week.
Giants: Safeties Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips have been fined a total of $30,000 for unnecessary roughness calls in last weekend's loss to the Washington Redskins. The NFL confirmed the fines on Friday. The league did not identify the plays but both probably involved Redskins tight end Fred Davis. Rolle was fined $20,000 for spearing an opponent with his helmet. Phillips was fined $10,000 because he unnecessarily struck an opponent in the head and neck area. Phillips indicated in the locker room on Friday that he planned to appeal the fine.
Bills: receiver Stevie Johnson returned to practice on Friday, and is expected to play on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. Coach Chan Gailey said Johnson is officially listed as probable after getting the day off Thursday to rest a sore groin that has been bothering him the past month. Cornerback Terrence McGee won't play against Oakland (1-0) because of a hamstring injury sustained in Buffalo's season-opening win at Kansas City. McGee is expected to be out for at least a couple more weeks. Linebacker Arthur Moats (knee) is probable, but defensive lineman Torell Troup (back) is doubtful.
Eagles: Eagles left tackle Jason Peters suffered an ankle injury in practice Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game with the Atlanta Falcons.
Peters, a four-time Pro Bowl player who is the lone offensive lineman in the same spot as he was a year ago, suffered the injury near the end of Friday's practice in a team drill. He limped out of the indoor practice facility accompanied by one of the team's trainers.

DirecTV streams NFL games for added sales

DirecTV, like rival Dish Network Corp, has been trying to boost its subscriber numbers as lower-cost online entertainment options from Netflix Inc, Google Inc and Amazon.com Inc threaten its growth.

"The goal here is to open up the product to people and to test to see whether there's a new revenue stream here: selling Sunday ticket over-the-top to people who can't get DirecTV," said Alex Kaplan, DirecTV's senior director of sports marketing.

Kaplan said the company was trying to get the most from an NFL contract with an estimated annual cost of $1 billion over four years through the 2014 season.

"We'll continue to exploit it in any way possible," he said.

The company said Sunday Ticket had always been profitable, but declined to comment on revenue projections for this year.

The next step will be looking at other gaming consoles and connected devices, Kaplan said.

Brean Murray analyst Todd Mitchell said DirecTV was right in squeezing as much as it can out of Sunday ticket.

DirecTV and Dish "will increasingly look to deliver content over the top," he said. Dish won movie chain Blockbuster in a bankruptcy auction in April.

DirecTV is relying on Sunday Ticket to help win customers from cable companies such as Comcast Corp and Time Warner Cable Inc.

In its latest marketing push, DirecTV is offering a free year of Sunday Ticket to new subscribers who switch from rivals, which sparked a lawsuit with Comcast.

The company, which has about 2 million Sunday ticket subscribers, started promoting the offer after the resolution of the NFL labor dispute in the summer.

While it is unclear how many subscribers will pay for the NFL games after the promotion ends, Kaplan said: "We've seen really strong early results so far. It seems to be working."

Shares of DirecTV were down 0.4 percent at $42.43 in morning trading.

  IF ROBBIE Keane’s journey from the English Premier League to Major League Soccer in the United States will be something of a trip in to the footballing unknown for the Irish captain, it’s nothing compared to the adventure Samuel Eto’o will embark on if his transfer from Inter Milan to Anzhi Makhachkala goes through.

The deal stalled earlier this week with Inter said to be holding out for a €35 million fee for the 30-year-old Cameroonian, Anzhi reported to have offered €10m less.

Considering the club, based in the troubled southern Russian province of Dagestan, is owned by billionaire oil tycoon Suleiman Kerimov ( Forbes put his worth at €5.5 billion earlier this year), you’d imagine they won’t fall out over a trifling €10 million.

“Eto’o is said to be excited by the prospect of joining the developing Russian League and the revolution at Anzhi” read a story on the wires earlier this week.

Well, you would be too: reports say he has agreed a three-year deal worth €23m per season (per season!), which would make him the world’s highest paid footballer, putting Cristiano Ronaldo (€14m) and Lionel Messi (€12m) in the ha’penny place.

Also on a pittance compared to Eto’o’s proposed deal is Brazilian Roberto Carlos (now 38) who joined Anzhi back in February. He won’t go hungry, though: he signed a two-year deal worth €10 million.

“I am going to Russia extremely intrigued,” he said, “when I decided to continue my career in this country, money was not a crucial factor.” (Stop chuckling at the back).

Carlos has since been the target of racist abuse during Anzhi games, a common enough occurrence in Russian football, walking off the pitch in protest in June when a banana was thrown at him by opposing supporters. Still, when his contract expires in 2013 Carlos says he is “likely to become president of the club”.

“With the capabilities and ambitions of Suleiman Kerimov anything can be achieved,” he said.

And, it has to be said, bought.

Baa . . . d news for bike-riding models

NATURALLY ENOUGH, New Zealanders are eager to make good use of the rugby World Cup in an attempt to promote the country and attract more visitors to its shores, but not all the bright ideas being proposed are getting a warm reception.

Granted, there were some who quite liked the idea of models in bikinis driving motorbikes through downtown Auckland as a climax to festivals around the country in the build-up to the World Cup final. They were, though, a little less enamoured by the proposal on hearing the motorbike-riding models would actually be driving 1,000 sheep through said streets.

“We’ll be portrayed as Te Kuiti on steroids,” complained Herald columnist Brian Rudman in reference to the ‘sheep shearing capital of the world’ on the North Island. “The place where the Gucci shop got mobbed by a flock of live Ugg boots.”

Auckland prides itself in being a cosmopolitan spot, populated by “city slickers”, “a sophisticated centre of culture and fine dining and designer labels” wrote Rudman. “(Festival director) Briony Ellis says it will give visitors the chance to experience the Kiwi lifestyle. Yeah, right. When did she last share her lunchtime decaf latte with a bunch of smelly sheep?”

Bad news for anyone planning on travelling to Auckland to witness the spectacle: the idea has been binned, partly as a result of protests from the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The good news is that the Gucci shoppers will, at least, be safe from rampaging live Ugg boots.

Empires crumble, Kingdoms fall, India lose

INDIA’S unrelenting cricketing struggles in England this summer have not, predictably enough, gone down too well back home, their innings-and-242-run defeat (their third worst ever) in the third Test, which saw England overtake them as the world’s top-ranked side, prompting newspaper headlines along the lines of “From kings to commoners” and “India’s shame”. Few matched the levels of despair in this Times of India editorial, though: “Kingdoms fall. Empires crumble. Regimes collapse. It is the unwritten law of history. But who would have thought that India’s reign would come to an end like this – so swiftly, so feebly, so abjectly?

“In just three Tests, spread over three dismal weeks and across three historic cities, they have not just tumbled from the pedestal; they have fallen from grace, from reverence even, only to land firmly on their swollen faces. As the last rites were performed on Saturday, the most worshipped team’s triumphs and achievements faded into insignificance. As the innings-and-242-run win was completed, the great run-machine’s reputation and legacy lay in tatters.”

TV looks to Rory to be next 'rainmaker'

SUCH ARE the rewards in his line of work Rory McIlroy might not have garnered a huge amount of sympathy when he talked recently about the downside of his success and how life has changed so dramatically since winning his first Major.

Still, having to hire security guards to patrol the area around his Co Down home “every night since I won the US Open”, because of uninvited visitors attempting to sneak a peak at the golfer and his house, is one of the more intrusive by-products of that success that the 22-year-old could do without.

“It isn’t very nice, but it’s something I am just going to have to deal with,” he said. “It’s tough but it is just the world we live in, unfortunately. If you’re in the position we’re in, you’re so public.”

The experience, he said, partly contributed to his decision to base himself in America next year where, he hopes, whatever scrutiny he has to endure will be more about his golf than his life outside the game.

And, based on the television viewing figures for last week’s USPGA Championship, the sport in America could do with a contented and in-form McIlroy lighting up its screens.

While PGA Tour rookie Keegan Bradley’s play-off victory over Jason Dufner might have made a great sporting story, the contest between two relative unknowns did little to attract the kind of ratings that the sport so desperately needs.

Nielsen’s figures showed that CBS averaged a 4.3 household rating for its coverage on the final day, down 14 per cent from the previous year’s 5.0 (when Martin Kaymer beat Bubba Watson in a play-off) and a complete collapse from its 7.5 rating in 2009 when, inevitably, Tiger Woods was the star attraction – he led going in to the final round, losing by three strokes in the end to YE Yang.

Woods, of course, failed to make the cut at the US PGA Championship, and won’t play again until November (his next scheduled tournament is the Australian Open).

“This can’t be good news for PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, who is heading into negotiations for a new TV contract,” wrote Golf Week’s Martin Kaufmann.

“Businesses never like uncertainty, and right now, there’s an abundance of it surrounding the Tour’s rainmaker.”

But judging by Kaufmann’s criticism of American television coverage of the USPGA Championship, there’s no let-up in that media push to declare McIlroy, more so than any of the game’s other rising stars, heir to the ‘rainmaker’. Coverage, said Kaufmann, of McIlroy’s injury on the Thursday “received the full Tiger Woods treatment”.

“He was injured 87 minutes into TNT’s first-round telecast,” he wrote.

“For the next hour, TNT essentially stopped covering the rest of the tournament. It was the television equivalent of not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Cameras lingered on McIlroy – standing around, walking, getting treatment – almost to the exclusion of everyone else on the course . . . it amounted to a temporary suspension of live tournament coverage.”

Contrast that attention with, for example, Luke Donald’s press conference before the tournament, the world number one “facing more empty seats than actual people”. And, needless to say, Woods’ return to action was the theme of the bulk of the questions he was asked.

He, though, won’t be making any rain for a while. There might have been 11 different winners of the last 11 Majors, nine of them first-time Major champions, but, for now at least, McIlroy is the one the ratings-watchers are pinning their hopes on.

No pressure.

'Friendship' tour proves to be not so friendly

BEFORE setting off for China on their 10-day ‘friendship’ tour, Georgetown University’s basketball team was briefed by the State Department and told what to expect during their visits to Beijing and Shanghai.

“We look to these types of exchanges to promote good sportsmanship and strengthen our people-to-people contact with China,” said State Department spokesman Mark Toner.

How has the tour being going? Excellently – well, if you overlook Thursday’s encounter with the Bayi Military Rockets, an army team that plays in the China Basketball Association, at Beijing’s Olympic Stadium.

With 10 minutes to go, and the scores level, all hell broke loose with fighting breaking out all over the court (right), “triggering a bench-clearing melee”, according to Reuters. It was, reported Chinese newspaper Yangzi Evening News, “very physical from the beginning and the situation deteriorated”. CNN claimed that one of the Bayi players pushed a Georgetown opponent to the ground and punched him repeatedly.

After spectators began hurling plastic bottles on the court, the Georgetown players walked off, at which point, understandably enough, the match was called off. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Shanghai tomorrow night. The State Department will, you suspect, be holding its breath.

La NFL Restablece Michael Vick

 Quarterback Michael Vick a conditional return to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been granted, and could begin playing as early as week 6, the NFL announced today.
Old quart Falcons was indefinitely suspended in 2007 after which criminal charges for land operations Kennelz News Bad dog fighting. Now the Blazers have the No. 21 in the first round, then the No. 51 selection in the second round. It is likely that Thomas was back on set at the end of the second round, but there are many projects that are fun to Bryan-Amaning shortly before that can be selected. NBA shouldn't sleep on Charles Jenkins

Kentucky's Brandon Knight and UConn's Kemba Walker had stellar runs in the NCAA Tournament, which their boosted respective draft stocks.

However, which of these three studs will be most successful in the NBA?

Let's take a closer look at Irving, Knight and Walker and how each of their games will transfer to the next level.

The Capitols disbanded after the rookie Sharman, and ended with the Celtics in Boston, where he played for the rest of his career in the NBA.

In his career, played for 11 NBA seasons and Sharman retired with a career average of 17.8 points per game. There was a time of eight stars and won four championships with the Celtics. Sharman Minor League Baseball in the Dodgers system in 1950 played until 1955.

He played one year at Butler Community College basketball. Phoenix Suns drafted Jackson in the second round of the NBA in 1997, but resigned before the season.

After averaging 21.6 points and 11.2 rebounds at UNLV for two seasons 1990 and 1991, was the first NBA draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets in 1991. Johnson played 10 years in the NBA, averaging 16.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He retired prematurely because of a back injury. He made more than $ 83,000,000 salary in the NBA.


Beaty was born Zelma, 25 October 1939 at Hillister, Texas. After the game was in College Prairie View A & M University, the third choice in the 1962 NBA Draft by the St. Louis Hawks. Beaty then played seven years in the NBA with an average of 16.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He was All-Star 1966 and 1968. McHale has his work cut out with Rockets

As expected, the Houston Rockets named Hall of Famer Kevin McHale as their new head coach Friday.
I have mixed feelings. I still remember when McHale was a player on the 1986 Boston Celtics that beat the Rockets in the NBA Finals, but I’m going to try and give him a chance.
Former coach Rick Adelman didn’t grow on me. He had no charisma on the sidelines or in press conferences and I never understood his player rotations. Louis Scola was one of his most consistent scorers every night this past season, yet he benched him for much of the fourth quarter in close games.
McHale has coached less than 100 games in the NBA — twice serving as an interim coach for the struggling Minnesota Timberwolves — and made some awful personnel decisions while serving as the general manager.
Listening to sports talk radio this week, the majority of fans don’t seem to support this hiring.
Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey is one of the best in the league and if McHale impressed him enough to hire him, he must have done something right.
I already renewed my ticket package for next season, so I’ll be there. I hope McHale strengthens the team defense and provides a spark for a team that has been on the verge of the playoffs the last couple of years.
I don’t think hiring McHale is the most important personnel move that the Rockets will make this season. Even more important than hiring a new head coach, the Rockets need better players.
Morey has several high draft picks in his pocket that I’m hoping he uses them wisely.
It’s no fun watching the Dallas Mavericks and their obnoxious owner Mark Cuban and the Miami Heat featuring the star of “The Decision” LeBron James fighting it out for the NBA championship.
I’m ready for the Rockets to be back among the NBA’s elite.
